Gods
The religion of Mesopotamia was Polytheism- the worship of many gods. The main gods and goddesses they worshiped were An, the god of heaven, Ki, the goddess of the earth, Enil, the god of the air, and Enki, the god of water. There were also other more minor gods and goddesses of the sky, moon , love, war, and even of axes, plows, and bricks. Different gods looked over each city as well. Nanna, the moon god, looked over the city of Ur, for example.

Worship and Temples
There were many ways the people worshiped the gods. Often, people sang hymns, or thanked the gods and goddesses. This was usually held in temples. Temples had rooms for priests, courtyards to worship, and storage for valuables. Walls surrounded the temples to separate them from the city. There were also festivals people held to worship and thank the gods. One of them is to thank the gods for the harvest of barley, a very important crop.

Demons
Mesopotamians also believed in demons and monsters. They believed these evils caused misfortunes, and that they must pray to the gods to protect them from their evil.
